In this video John Barrett, award winning fashion, advertising and fine art photographer, will mentor you through the creative process that he uses to take a Creative Idea, add a little inspiration, combine it with great communication, and add the correct photographic recipe that will result in capturing the Creative Image which you will be proud to claim as your own.

What is the difference between a competent photographer and a great photographer?

A great photographer has the ability to pre-visualise the Creative Image they want to capture. Before they lift the camera to their eye, they have already mixed the photographic recipe for the final image. They then can communicate this Creative Idea to the talent and team.

So, where does this Creative Idea come from?

Experience and practice play a huge part, but the rules are the same whether a lifetime veteran or a diligent amateur.

We start by discovering the subject that you are most passionate about. In the early days of your photographic journey you explore as many subjects as you can, but progressively you need to narrow it to those subjects that have most meaning to you.

Next, we gather influences from the millions of images and experiences that we are exposed to constantly. You learn to look for poses, lighting, locations or virtually anything that is of interest to you. JB shows how with his direction you can make a moodboard to communicate those ideas in your head clearly to others. There will be no one image that shows exactly what the end image will be, but taken as a whole these actions will answer most of your creative questions.

Remember, we are never copyists but draw our inspiration from around us.

Turn Your Vision Into a Polished Image

This video touches on the decisions that are made about those fundamental aspects of photography which we delve deeply into in later videos – The Camera, The Lens, The Lighting and those aesthetics to be decided upon such as composition, colour, posing, and the talent.

You’re taught about Lighting Diagrams and their importance in planning the look and feel of your creative idea.

All these are combined to provide you with that most important aspect of being a great photographer – Effective Communication.

An image can be made or broken by the performance of your talent and team. You are an expert at the techniques of photography, yet without clear communication to the stakeholders the end result can be dull and boring.

By the end of this video you will understand how to define your Creative Idea, make decisions on the photographic ‘recipe’, assemble your team, and effectively communicate how the creative Image should broadly look.

Now you can let your creativity off the leash, knowing that the shoot is under control.
